Fred Fulwood from 1939-44.
Fulwood was already a captain when he came to Santa Barbara in February 1944. His first assignment was CO of the Headquarters Squadron MBDAG-45, a position he held for a year. In January 1945 he was made CO of the 'Marine Carrier Air Service Detachment #2' where he served until transferred from the USS GI in Sept 1945. This series of photos shows him inspecting his unit on the carrier. Note the crisp uniforms! The photographer and Marines were well prepared for this photo-op. Photo series like this are not often encountered.
Capt. Fulwood and Alex Raymond (seen second from left) are arm-in-arm
having fun at the Officer's Club. Capt. Fulwood wrote this caption: "Even the toughest of us required some relief from
the horrors of war. And thus we relaxed at such hideaways as the
Officer's Club at Samar and Leyte in the Philippines. We sang songs and drank grape juice (as evident here)
and generally cavorted in a manner in keeping with our positions as
officers and gentlemen of the United States Marine Corps. We
even rubbed beer in one another's hair!" The Navy
officer does not look very amused.
In this staged series Capt. Fulwood helps spot aircraft from a vantage point on the carrier.
Capt. Fulwood's photos include this nice one of the Marine Corps officers aboard the carrier but not assigned to the squadrons. If you can ID any of them please let me know. Panerai Replica Watches After the war he served in various USMC facilities and the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS) as an announcer.
